Incorporating local Lowcountry art and furnishings into your custom home

The greatest art tells a story, and we know that your life story most certainly includes the places and spaces where your best memories are made. That’s precisely why we delight in incorporating local artwork, accents, and furnishings into our residential interior design plans whenever possible. In addition to making your house feel more like home, establishing a local collection is a fantastic way to invest in the talented, hardworking artisans who reside here in the Lowcountry.

We’re surrounded by breathtaking beauty here on the Carolina Coast, so it’s no surprise that marshlands, seascapes, herons, oyster shells, and colorful abstracts are favored motifs among Lowcountry artists. Prefer to amass an art collection that combines the best of form and function? You’ll be happy to hear that useable works of art—including gorgeous hand-shaped vases, vessels, and pottery—are also in abundance.

The charming, historic town of Bluffton has a particularly noteworthy art scene. Take a stroll through Old Town Bluffton and you’ll find cottages that double as local art galleries filled with pieces that capture the essence of Lowcountry living. At Furnish, we also love working with The Artizan Studios to source original works and commission custom pieces for our clients.

No matter your style, we can promise you that local art and furnishings will fit flawlessly into the interior design plans for your custom home. Keep scrolling for proof from one of our recent projects!

Clay Bowls + Encaustic Canvas

from The Artizan Studios (Bluffton, SC)

For this gorgeous custom build in Palmetto Bluff, we chose a neutral palette that exudes laidback coastal luxury. Intermixing the homeowners’ heirloom collectibles with newer selections gave the decor a sense of having been gathered over time. Although the clay bowls created by Lisa Daniels and Diana Vartabedian of The Artizan Studios were new additions to the home’s kitchen, the exquisite hand-shaped pottery evokes the patina of an antique collection.

Positioned on the mantle above the fireplace, an encaustic canvas by Christine Patterson (also represented by The Artizan Studios) anchors the living room. The moody tones pair perfectly with the room’s traditional palette, while the quintessential Lowcountry motif injects the space with a sense of place.

Custom Bathroom Vanity

from Al & Harry’s (Bluffton, SC)

At Furnish, we firmly believe that powder bathrooms have the potential to become power bathrooms. With the right wall coverings and fixtures, your powder bath will come to be considered a jewel box within your home. At the center of this jewel box, of course, is the bathroom vanity.

To complement the unique patterned wallpaper while also continuing our theme of integrating the old and new, a custom vanity was a must. Al & Harry’s, a Bluffton shop located on Calhoun Street that specializes in refurbishing and repurposing vintage furnishings, created the perfect piece just for our clients. The combination of dark wood, tin drawer accents, a marble counter, and cement sink is completely one-of-a-kind, and beautifully highlights the varied tones of the statement wallpaper in the space.

Art and furnishings undoubtedly enhance the architectural beauty of a house, but they also provide the personality and character that turns a house into a home. Local pieces have the ability to become statement makers, conversation starters, collection anchors, and so much more.

Convinced that local art has the power to completely change your space? Our team would love to help you find pieces that reflect your style and establish cohesion between the hard and soft finishes of your custom Shoreline home. Contact us today…and let’s start sourcing!
